New Publication Alert!

Our team at CEA has just published new research on Isosorbide, a bio-based material for Phase-Change Material (PCM) Thermal Energy Storage (TES) systems, now featured in Journal of Energy Storage.

The study investigates supercooling of Isosorbide and strategies to manage it across multiple scales—from milligram samples to 37 kg TES prototype. A combination of seeding and N₂ bubbling was tested to trigger crystallization, with bubbling proving highly effective, even at prototype scale.

Highlights:
• Extensive supercooling observed across all scales
• Material-scale: solidifies below 5 °C, melts at 60–65 °C
• Lab-scale: supercooling >30 °C; N₂ bubbling triggers efficient crystallization
• TES prototype-scale: bubbling ensures reproducible discharge and enhances energy recovery through temperature homogenization

This work provides crucial insights for harnessing bio-based PCMs in low- to moderate-temperature TES applications.
